Easter is always a fun time for little kids! This Easter was especially special (and crazy) at our house this year. The girls were both baptized during the Easter Vigil service on Saturday night, so we had a house full of people this year. There were about 13 people in our house Friday and Saturday. For those of you who have been to our house, you know that it's not that big!! But....we managed and enjoyed the company! Morgan loves seeing her grandparents and playing with her cousins! And per my last post "The House of Ill", Friday was the time Dana started getting sick. He was in the chair most of the day Friday and all of the day Saturday. He made it to the baptism, sweating buckets due to fever. He was in bed again on Monday and Tuesday and attempted to go to work on Wednesday, but was back home in bed by 7:30 am. That was about the same time Morgan and I started to get a scratchy throat! She was sent home from school Thursday (Dana was still home) and I stayed home with her on Friday since he finally went back to work!!! OK.....so that was our week.....now back to Easter........
It's not Easter without an Easter Egg hunt! This was Ava's first hunt - although I don't think she really understood why we were walking around the yard picking up plastic eggs, she finally caught on to what she was suppose to do. Here she is with my mom.

And Morgan trying to get as many eggs as she can so she can tell her cousin "I have more than you have."

And of course it's not Easter without dying eggs. Ava had fun playing with the egg and banging it on the table!

Now, as you all know the Easter Bunny comes every year! Our Easter Bunny is a little too generous. With all those grandma and grandpa bunnies and Aunt and Uncle bunnies we tend to go a little overboard every year and the kids end up with WAY TOO MUCH STUFF!!!! Of course we always appreciate the kindness and generosity of our bunnies - I'm not sure the kids are always learning the true reason we celebrate Easter! They just want the STUFF. Here is a picture of part of what was given to my 2 kids and my
niece and nephew.
And Morgan all excited over one of her gifts from her basket.

Here is Ava snuggled in to one of her bunnies. Notice the chocolate egg in her hand that she later figured out how to open!

Now, I have to admit, Easter is a great time for photo opportunities and excitement, but after this year I realized that next year I think we need to focus more on giving, rather than receiving. Why, do you ask? Well, during a shopping trip to
Wal-Mart with Morgan a couple days before Easter, she and I got into an argument which ended in me calling her "GREEDY". You see,
Morgan is all about getting, getting and getting more. She has no concept of money and doesn't really care about anybody but herself. Yeah, I know part of that is her age, but MOST of it is that we have given her so much. Basically, what Morgan wants, Morgan gets. It has always been that way. So, we are shopping in the craft section at
Wal-Mart looking for supplies to make our Easter Egg tree when she asked if she could have silk flowers. I told her no, not today, because we were picking up things for Easter. She starting whining and carrying on and saying how it wasn't fair and I never buy her anything and she went on and on and on about it. Of course I had about all I could take and called her greedy and tried to explain to her that we were shopping together for supplies to make this pretty Easter Egg tree and that it shouldn't be about the STUFF we get, but the time we spend together playing, doing crafts, etc. And then I asked her if she thought if MORE was better and she said "yes". I was absolutely devastated. What have I been teaching her all these years? At age six, she doesn't realize that spending time with family, having fun together is more important than STUFF. So.....now it is my job (and your job as our family and friends) to help teach my children about the value in giving rather than
receiving and about understanding what Easter is really about. So my challenge for you from this point forward is to try to find ways to teach your kids to care about others and enjoy spending time with each other as a family without all of the STUFF. And for all our grandma and grandpa bunnies and Aunt and Uncle bunnies, I challenge you to find ways to make Easter (and other holidays) special without spending so much money and buying so much stuff! Not that we don't appreciate all that has been given to our kids over the years (because we do), I think now is the time to think more creatively about what we give and how we give to our kids. We have a year to think about it (or a little less if we start for Christmas) so let's get creative! OH, and one more thing, Let's go GREEN next year! No more plastic eggs, no more plastic grass, and no more chemically made
Easter egg dye! Let's be kind to our Earth and teach our kids how to be kind to our Earth too. I hope this time next year I will no longer have to call my children Greedy and they will want to give as much to others in need as they enjoy receiving STUFF this year!
